Deep Sea Fishing

This island boasts some of the best deep sea fishing in the world. Visitors can catch sharks, yellow and white tuna, bonito, and barracuda, among other species. A special draw is the blue marlin, which frequents the waters around Mauritius between November and April. Competitions are held regularly in the area, and many world fishing records have been set here. Most hotels will be able to arrange a fishing boat for any interested visitors.

Spa Treatments

There are a large number of high-class spas in Mauritius for those who wish to relax even more than the average tourist. Various packages offer everything from a simple massage or facial to a several-day personalized course of treatment.

Golf

There are five nine-hole and three eighteen-hole golf courses at the hotels on Mauritius. The most spectacular of these is considered to be the One & Only Le Touessrok Golf Course, which is located on its own island. All 18 holes of this course have a view of the ocean, and the course was designed to provide challenges and enjoyment to golfers of all levels. There is also a private eighteen-hole course at Vacoas, on which visitors can play for a fee. Golf instruction is offered at many of the hotels that have courses.

Shopping

Souvenirs of all kinds can be bought on Mauritius duty free for relatively low prices. Popular purchases include textiles, pottery, embroidery, baskets, figurines, and items made of recycled glass. Many food items are packaged ready to take back home as well, such as Indian-style pickle, chili peppers, and fruit products, as well as special kinds of sugar and, of course, local rum.

Walking and Hiking

Mauritius is a pleasure to walk around, whether on the beach, on a mountain trail, or in designated areas of nature preserves.

Swimming and the Beach

Last but certainly not least is the reason that most people come to Mauritius: the sea, bordered by gorgeous white sand beaches. Swimming and simply visiting the beach to sunbathe or enjoy the view are favorite occupations for tourists and locals alike.

Dining

Mauritius is a meeting place for cultures and their culinary customs. There is great variety to the food here, and the Mauritians love to eat and experiment with new flavors. Local food is delicious, and some of the resorts have hired world-class chefs as well.
